The Brazilian textile manufacturer began production of nonwoven materials this month at the facility.
Michael Smith, executive director of the Greater Statesville Economic Development Corp., calls the project “the largest announced manufacturing investment in Statesville in more than 20 years.”
Uses include disposable hygiene goods and medical gowns.
The area has become a gathering point for such facilities, with seven in operation within 90 miles of Charlotte. Nonwovens are produced by bonding natural and man-made fibers without weaving or spinning them.
Incentives for the addition total $2 million. Most will be provided by Iredell County and Statesville. North Carolina will contribute $42,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, which is used to attract business projects that create jobs in the state.
Providencia announced in December 2009 it would build the initial plant. In November, the company's board approved additional spending at plants in Brazil and the United States.
