The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has officially entered into force, introducing new measures to combat excessive packaging and its environmental impact. The regulation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and overall environmental costs in the packaging sector.

In addition to promoting sustainability, the regulation seeks to develop a single market for waste, secondary, and reusable materials. It encourages recycling, reduces reliance on primary resources, and supports reuse and refill alternatives to single-use packaging.

Consumers will benefit from improved information and better sorting mechanisms for packaging waste, tailored to the needs of businesses and member states, the European Commission said in a release.

The new framework is expected to boost the circular economy by creating jobs, driving innovation in packaging solutions, and enhancing efficiency in the recycling industry. Restrictions on hazardous substances will further safeguard consumer health and the environment.
