The Indian Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals conducted its 3rd training programme on ‘Chemical and Petrochemical Industrial Safety’ at CIPET: IPT-Bhubaneswar from January 10–11, 2025. Organised under the Government of India’s Action Plan for Viksit Bharat@2047, the initiative focused on addressing safety protocols for Major Accident Hazard (MAH) units in the chemical and petrochemical sector.

This programme is the part of a series of training programmes aimed at strengthening safety in the country's 2,393 identified MAH units. Over the next five years, 48 training programmes are planned to cover all units. This training programme witnessed participation of 108 representatives across 62 chemical industries including participants from 41 MAH units, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers said in a press release.

Experts from prestigious organisations, including IIT Bhubaneswar, CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), and the State Pollution Control Board, alongside prominent industries like IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphate Ltd, and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, delivered lectures.

Key themes covered during the training programme included advance risk assessment techniques, toxicology, onsite & offsite emergency plan, role of ICT and other technologies in chemical safety, global harmonised system, hazardous identification techniques, loss statistics and loss prevention, process safety management, environmental prevention and spill prevention, hazardous waste management, labelling of chemicals and safety data sheet (SDS) & fire and explosion safety.

To give the industrial employees a hands-on experience, a mock drill was also conducted in coordination with the State Fire Department, Odisha.
