People protest against construction of PX plant in Kunming

Hundreds of people protested in Southwestern Chinese city of Kunming on the afternoon of May 4 against the planned construction of a paraxylene (PX) plant in Anning.

The protest was against a proposal of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to build a 500,000 ton PX plant in Anning city of Kunming in Yunnan province.

The protestors carried placards that read “no PX in Kunming” and “PX project get out”.

PX is a petrochemical by-product that is used as a raw material in the production of polyester fabrics.

The project has raised environmental concerns as PX is considered carcinogenic.

Last year, a similar protest was witnessed against a proposed refinery expansion in the eastern city of Ningbo, leading to suspension of the planned expansion.
