The prices of benzene increased in Asian markets in the last fortnight ending April 15, 2014, compared to the previous fortnight ending March 31, due to robust demand coupled with rise in downstream value. The uptrend was also seen in Europe, but a declining trend was observed in the US.

In Korea, the average price of benzene in the last fortnight was US$ 1285/ton, which was 3.21 percent higher than the $1245/ton average price recorded in the previous fortnight. On April 25, benzene price was assessed at $1260/ton.

In the Indian market, the average price of benzene increased by 3.19 percent in the last fortnight to $1295/ton, compared to the average price of $1255/ton in the previous fortnight. On April 25, price was assessed at $1270/ton.

In Japan, the average price of benzene in the last fortnight was $1290/ton, up 3.2 percent over the previous fortnight’s average price of $1250/ton. On April 25, price was hovering at $1265/ton.

In the European market, benzene prices surged up during the last fortnight due to strong buying intentions, firm energy value and tight product availability in the region. The average price in the last fortnight was $1480/ton, which was 5.34 percent higher than the previous fortnight’s average price of $1405/ton. On April 24, price was assessed at $1450/ton.

In the U.S.A market, however, benzene prices declined due to subdued demand from the region coupled with weak energy value during that period. The average price decreased to 480 cents/gallon, down 2.04 percent, as against the average price of 490 cents/gallon in the previous fortnight.
