Polyester staple fiber sector in Southeast Asia is facing some harsh difficulties as demand is incessantly dropping and the prices were lowest in the world with pitiable margins.

Thailand man-made fibre (MMF) industry registered a decline of 2.2 percent in the output during January-May 2006 period, with 4.3 percent plunge in the month of May alone.

The recorded production in May was 62,671 tons, raising it to 327,658 tons for January-May period.

Much of the MMF market has been replaced by cotton products for the past year or so.

While only 50 percent of the MMF output is used up domestically, around 95 percent of cotton produce is consumed by the local markets.
