Albrecht, President of the Brazilian Association for Producers of Artificial and Synthetic Fibers (Abrafas) stated that the expectation is for annual earnings at the complex to reach US$ 8 billion six to eight years from now, when the entire chain is in operation. We are working to solve the polyester problem in Brazil.

This project will permit the manufacturing of texturized polyester at international prices and stimulate the weaving, knitwear and polyester apparel industry in Brazil. According to Albrecht, the production scale for the yarn in Brazil fell tremendously, from 15 companies 15 years ago, to only five today.

He added that imports supplied 1 percent of the market 12 years ago, and today accounts for 50 percent. The polyester yarns and fabrics were the biggest victims of the increased importations from Asia over the past years.

According to ABIT data, polyester fiber imports increased 49 percent between January and October compared to the same period last year.

Jorg Albrecht says that the project will begin to produce within 1½ to 4 years. At the same time, the group of textile industries joined Petrobrás and Braskem to carry out a similar project in Camaçari, Bahia. The project foresees investments of US$ 700 million, but it has not progressed as much as the Suape complex thus far.

The Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT), through its program of incentive to exports, Texbrasil, and with thesupport of APEX-Brasil, will take five Brazilian companies to participate in Heimtextil, the International trade fair for home textiles and commercially used textiles that will be held in Frankfurt, Germany, from January 11 to 14, 2006. These five Brazilian companies are: Buddemeyer, Teka, Karsten, Toalhas São Carlos and Buettner.
