Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has been given the environment clearance (EC) for expansion of its petrochemical complex near Hazira in Surat district of Gujarat. The project entails investment of Rs 2,100 crore to increase production capacities by debottlenecking of some plants in a phased manner, and expansion through technological upgradation.

The existing complex comprises naphtha cracker, feeding downstream petrochemicals, fibre intermediates and polyester plants.

In its proposal to the environment ministry, RIL has mentioned that it would complete debottlenecking of some plants in two year after obtaining the EC, while it would take 3-5 years for setting up of new plants.

The environment ministry gave the EC to RIL’s proposal after taking into account the recommendations of its Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), the ministry said in its letter to RIL.

However, the EC is subject to compliance of some specific and general conditions. RIL has been asked to strengthen the existing green belt by 20 hectare and earmark 2.5 per cent of the total cost of the project towards the enterprise social responsibility. The company has also been asked to strictly adhere to the stipulations made by the Gujarat State Pollution Control Board, state government and other statutory authorities.

Besides Gujarat, RIL has its manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. (RKS)
