Germany's retail trade turnover down 6.9% YoY in Jan 2023: Destatis

Germany's retail trade recorded a 6.9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decrease in turnover in real terms and a nominal increase of 2.8 per cent in January 2023, as per the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Retail turnover decreased by 0.6 per cent in January 2023 compared with January 2020, the corresponding month before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The real (price-adjusted) turnover of all retail enterprises in Germany declined by 0.3 per cent and the nominal (not price-adjusted) turnover dropped by 0.7 per cent, on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, in January 2023 on a month-on-month (MoM) basis, Destatis said in a press release.

In December 2022, the country’s real retail turnover decreased by 5.3 per cent MoM. In nominal terms, turnover was down by 4.8 per cent MoM in December 2022. Furthermore, on a YoY basis, retail turnover in December 2022 decreased by 6.4 per cent in real terms and increased by 4.2 per cent in nominal terms.
