Italy's retail sales down 0.7% MoM in volume terms in July 2021

In July 2021, estimates for seasonally adjusted index of retail trade in Italy slightly decreased month on month (MoM) by 0.4 per cent in value terms and by 0.7 per cent in volume terms. Looking at the value of sales for non-food products, all sectors witnessed growth. The largest increases were reported for clothing (15.4 per cent), shoes and leather goods.

In the three months to July 2021 value of sales rose by 0.5 per cent when compared with the previous three-month period, likewise volume increased by 0.4 per cent, according to the Italian National Institute of Statistics.

In July 2021 both value and volume of retail trade continued to grow year on year (YoY) for the 5th month in a row. Value sales increased by 6.7 per cent and volume sales rose by 8.8 per cent comparing to July 2020.

All channels of distribution increased in July this year, when compared with July 2020. Large-scale distribution was up 5.6 per cent, small-scale distribution grew by 8.2 per cent and non-store retail sales rose by 2.6 per cent.

Online sales recorded the smallest growth since November 2019 (3.7 per cent). Compared to July 2020, internet sales increased by 6.4 per cent.
