The country’s seasonally adjusted index indicated a slip in value sales by 0.4 per cent on a month-to-month basis in August 2023. Concurrently, the volume of retail sales experienced a more pronounced dip of 0.5 per cent.
However, for the three months leading up to August, the value of sales saw an uptick of 0.4 per cent in comparison to the preceding three months. On the contrary, the volume of sales showcased a decrease of 1 per cent during the same period, as per Istat.
A deeper look into non-food product sales reveals a varied performance across categories. In the year-on-year series for August 2023, the clothing sector saw a modest growth of 0.3 per cent. However, shoes, leather goods, and travel items experienced a decline, dropping by 0.6 per cent.
Large-scale distribution observed a robust rise of 4.8 per cent compared to August 2022. In contrast, small-scale distribution saw a minor decline of 0.2 per cent. The non-store retail sector, however, reported a growth of 1.3 per cent.
Lastly, the digital frontier of Italy's retail market continued to surge. Online sales in August 2023 were up by 1.4 per cent in comparison to the same month in 2022, further underscoring the nation's evolving retail landscape.
