Netherlands’ retail sector recorded 8.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) turnover growth in February 2023. The volume of sales decreased by 2.9 per cent. Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 5.3 per cent. Furthermore, online retail turnover increased by 6.0 per cent.

Retail turnover data has been adjusted for the shopping-day pattern in February. Retail sales tend to vary from one day to the next. February consists of exactly 4 calendar weeks, which is why the unadjusted retail turnover is more or less equal to the turnover for which the shopping-day pattern has been taken into account, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) said in a press release.

The volume of sales (adjusted for price changes) decreased by 3.3 per cent compared to the same month last year. Shops selling goods including clothing, footwear, leather products, and home furnishings saw YoY turnover growth in February.

Web shops recorded a turnover increase of 11.2 per cent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) achieved 1.4 per cent lower turnover in online sales. All subsectors recorded higher turnover in February 2023 compared to February 2022.
