Poland's retail sales drop in November 2023

Poland's retail sector experienced a downturn in November 2023, with retail sales at constant prices falling by 0.3 per cent compared to the same period in 2022, which had seen an increase of 1.6 per cent, according to Statistics Poland.

The monthly comparison paints a similarly challenging picture. When compared with October 2023, retail sales decreased by 2.8 per cent, indicating a downturn in consumer spending. This decline is more pronounced when looking at the broader January-November 2023 period, where sales decreased year-on-year by 2.4 per cent, a stark contrast to the 5.4 per cent growth recorded in 2022.

However, sales via the internet at current prices saw a substantial increase of 27.2 per cent in November compared to October 2023. The share of sales conducted via the internet in total sales rose from 9 per cent in October to 11.7 per cent in November 2023, as per Statistics Poland.

This shift towards digital platforms is evident across various retail groups, with a notable increase in the textiles, clothing, and footwear sector. The share of online sales in this category jumped from 19.9 per cent to an impressive 24.5 per cent.
