Retail sales index in euro area slips 3% YoY in Feb 2023

In February 2023, the calendar adjusted retail sales index decreased by 3.0 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the euro area and by 3.1 per cent YoY in the European Union (EU). The seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 0.8 per cent in the euro area and by 0.9 per cent in the EU in February 2023 compared with January 2023.

In January 2023, retail trade volume increased by 0.8 per cent in the euro area and by 0.9 per cent in the EU, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU.

In the euro area in February 2023, compared with January 2023, the volume of retail trade decreased by 1.8 per cent for automotive fuels and by 0.7 per cent for non-food products. In the EU, the volume of retail trade decreased by 1.4 per cent for automotive fuels and by 1.0 per cent for non-food products.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Slovenia at -10.5 per cent, Hungary and Poland at both -2.0 per cent, and Sweden at -1.6 per cent. The highest increases were observed in Cyprus at 1.6 per cent, Luxembourg at 0.8 per cent, and Belgium at 0.7 per cent.

In the euro area in February 2023, compared with February 2022, the volume of retail trade decreased by 1.8 per cent for non-food products, while it grew by 1.1 per cent for automotive fuels. In the EU, the retail trade volume decreased by 1.9 per cent for non-food products, while it grew by 0.1 per cent for automotive fuels.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest yearly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Hungary at -10.1 per cent, Sweden at -8.5 per cent, and Germany at -7.0 per cent. The highest increases were observed in Cyprus at 8.3 per cent, Luxembourg at 6.8 per cent, and Spain at 4.7 per cent.
