  • Small retailers in the UK are increasingly rejecting Black Friday, with 76.79 per cent opting out in 2025, up from 69 per cent a year earlier.
  • Only 23.21 per cent plan to take part.
  • Many say Black Friday distorts normal sales patterns and encourages price-driven shopping.
  • Instead, independents are promoting value, service and alternative community-focused campaigns.

More than three-quarters of independent retailers in the UK are refusing to join Black Friday this year, citing unsustainable margins and the dominance of major online platforms, according to a survey from British Independent Retailers Association (Bira).

Only 23.21 per cent of small businesses now plan to participate, compared with 30.99 per cent in 2024 while 76.79 per cent will boycott the event in 2025, up from 69 per cent last year.

Retailers argue they cannot compete with online giants, describing Black Friday as an ‘American sales ploy’ that primarily benefits large e-commerce players. Many said that discounting erodes profitability, especially after steep cost pressures including last year’s 140 per cent rates rise.

Others noted that the event distorts trading patterns, pushing customers to delay normal purchases in anticipation of offers that harm overall value.

“Our members are sending an increasingly clear message - Black Friday simply doesn't work for independent retailers. The pressure to discount at a time when margins are already squeezed, combined with rising operational costs, makes participation untenable for most small businesses,” Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said.

Several businesses said Black Friday discounts create unreasonable expectations, often bringing shoppers into stores only to walk out when no deals are offered. Many are instead promoting alternatives such as ‘Bright Friday’ or charity-led campaigns to highlight community values.

Independent retailers emphasised that customer service, exclusivity and year-round fair pricing remain their competitive strengths.

“We urge shoppers to support these businesses that contribute so much to their local communities - especially on Small Business Saturday on November 29, and throughout the crucial festive period,” Goodacre suggested.
