Apparel sales continue to dip at Japanese stores

For the fourth consecutive month, sales of apparel at department stores in Japan declined in October 2018. Apparel sales dropped 1 per cent compared to same month of last year to 156,479 million yen ($1.385 billion) as per the data compiled by the Japan Department Stores Association across its 79 members together accounting for 219 stores.

Menswear sales were down 3.2 per cent year-on-year, the fourth consecutive month of decline, to 35,203 million yen ($311.67 million) in October 2018.

Likewise, kidswear sales too decreased for the fourth month in a row to 9,824 million yen ($86.98 million), down 7 per cent, during the month, the association said.

However, after three consecutive months decline, womenswear sales increased by 0.5 per cent to 101,107 million yen ($895.15 million), the data showed. (RKS)
