Same-store sales of clothing fell 1.7 per cent year-on-year to 137,611 million yen in June 2019, at 215 stores owned by 78 member firms of the Japan Department Stores Association. June was the twelfth consecutive month since July 2018 when garment sales declined, according to the association. Cool and rainy weather during the month affected retail sales.

Womenswear (including accessories) sales decreased by 1.7 per cent to 88,598 million yen during the month under review, while kidswear sales declined by 3.7 per cent to 8,548 million yen. However, menswear sales increased for the first time in twelve months by 0.2 per cent to 31,368 million yen, the data showed.

The sharp rise in sales of luxury goods resulted in an increase of 0.6 per cent in sales of miscellaneous articles, which rose to 63,457 million yen, the first increase in three months.

Total sales, including sales of cosmetics, sundries and other articles, at the above mentioned 215 stores fell by 0.9 per cent to 478,974 million yen during the month. (RKS)
