The growth of apparel retail sales in China by volume remained almost flat at 0.99 percent year-on-year during the first six months of 2012, according to the National Commercial Information Centre of China.

In terms of value, the retail sales of garments in China increased by 9.82 percent year-on-year from January to June this year. However, this was about 12 percent lower than the 21.81 percent year-on-year growth witnessed during the corresponding period of last year.

Thus, the clothing retail sales growth was mostly due to increase in prices.

According to the report, garment retail sales begun to pick up from April onwards owing to promotional activities during holidays.

The first-half results released by many apparel brands are also not encouraging. The rising rent is making a dent on the profits of the Chinese apparel brands.

Last year, there was over 30 percent rise in rents of high-end shops, as per a survey of 2812 shopping centres in 106 cities across China.
