The clothing retail sales soared in South Korea last month due to an increase in demand for winter clothes, according to a report from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), Xinhuanet.com reported.

At major discount chains, clothing sales jumped 33.5 percent in September 2013, compared to a month earlier, according to the government report.

At department stores, the demand for men’s apparel shot up by 78 percent month-on-month in September, while the demand for women’s casuals grew by 40.6 percent month-on-month.

The three major discount outlets in South Korea—E-mart, Lotte Mart and Homeplus—together saw their sales expanding 7.6 percent month-on-month in September.

In comparison, the combined sales at three department stores—Lotte, Shinsegae and Hyundai—rose by 30.5 percent month-on-month.

However, sales at major convenient stores declined by 2.9 percent month-on-month in September. Sales dropped by 4.8 percent month-on-month at supermarkets and supermarket chains operated by big corporations, the report said.
