To its pleasures and pains, Kolkata is going to be crammed for space, with the coming up of at least 46 malls by 2010.

The requirement for retail space including malls and stand alone stores in Kolkata is predicted to take a quantum jump from 8,50,000 squarefeet in 2006 to 10 million squarefeet in 2010.

Necessity is the mother of invention. The mushrooming will take the malls also to the suburbs of Kolkata. There are already two malls coming up on Jessore road and one in Madhyamgram in the north. Howrah in the west, too, will soon have its own mall.

With the upcoming establishments, prominent brands such as Globus, Spencer's, Fun Republic and Adlabs will make their presence stronger in Kolkata.

One of the few standalone mega stores and speciality malls in the offing is being promoted by the Avani Group that will play host to high street fashion houses like Marks and Spencers.

Considering the latest trend, there is an increasing tendency to develop speciality malls, but only speciality mall such as home malls that deal in home furnishings is predicted to have a bright future.
