Retail sales rise 6.9% in May

South Africa's retail trade sales, at constant (2000) prices for the three months up to May 2005 increased by 6,9 percent compared with the three months up to May 2004.

Similarly, retail trade sales, at constant (2000) prices for the period January to May 2005 increased by 6,0% compared with the period January to May 2004. Retail trade sales, at constant (2000) prices for May 2005 increased by 4,8% compared with May 2004.

The retail sales value for May at present prices was up 8.1 percent to R30.6 billion rand compared with May 2004, while at constant 2000 prices was up 4.8 percent to 23.4 billion rand from the same month of last year.

Out of 30.6 billion rand in May, general dealers put in 9.7 billion rand, followed by all other retail trade at 6.5 billion rand and retailers of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods at 5.9 billion rand.
