Sales volume decreases for clothing, footwear in France in Sept 2023

The volume of sales in trade in France fell by 0.7 per cent month on month (MoM) in September this year after a 0.2 per cent growth in August, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE).

The drop was concentrated in the wholesale trade, where the volume of sales (except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles) dropped by 1.4 per cent MoM in September, compared to a 0.7 per cent rise in August.

The volume of sales bounced back slightly in the month in retail trade (except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles), rising by 0.2 per cent MoM after a drop of 1.1 per cent MoM in August.  The volume of sales decreased for clothing and footwear, an INSEE release said.

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade (except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles) is expected to have decreased in October this year by 1 per cent MoM.

From August to October 2023, it would be 2.7 per cent lower than that of the same three months a year earlier.

The volume of sales of the third quarter of 2023 decreased by 0.4 per cent year on year. Within retail trade, the volume of sales decreased markedly in non-specialised stores and more moderately in specialised stores.
