The Dutch retail sector has recorded a significant year-on-year (YoY) turnover growth of 11.3 per cent in January 2023, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The volume of sales also increased by 0.4 per cent YoY. If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in January 2023 was 11.1 per cent higher than in the same month last year.

The non-food sector saw the most significant growth, with a 21.5 per cent increase in turnover compared to the same month last year. This growth can be attributed to the strict lockdown until mid-January 2022, which significantly affected the non-food sector. All shops saw year-on-year turnover growth in January, with clothes shops (up 40 per cent) and shops selling footwear and leather products (up 35.2 per cent) experiencing significant increases, as per CBS.

On the other hand, online retail turnover decreased by 10.9 per cent YoY in January, with web shops recording a turnover decrease of 2.7 per cent YoY and multi-channel retailers achieving a 20.1 per cent YoY lower turnover in online sales. Furthermore, the online retail turnover of clothing and fashion products was down by 11.6 per cent YoY.
