Dutch retail sector turnover up 2.9%, clothing rises 5.7% in May

The Dutch retail sector recorded a year-on-year (YoY) growth in turnover of 2.9 per cent in May 2024, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The sales volume increased by 3.6 per cent during the same period. Clothes shops and shops selling footwear and leather products experienced substantial growth, with turnover increasing by 5.7 per cent and 5 per cent YoY, respectively.

In the non-food sector, turnover rose by 4.5 per cent YoY in May. The sales volume, adjusted for price changes, was up by 6.6 per cent compared to the same month last year, as per CBS.

Online retailers also saw an increase in turnover, up by 1.6 per cent YoY in May. However, the online turnover of clothing and fashion products decreased by 4.8 per cent. Online retailers, whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet, recorded a 7.2 per cent increase in turnover. In contrast, multi-channel retailers, who sell goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity, experienced a 5.3 per cent decline in their online sales turnover.
