Year-on-year, the calendar-adjusted retail sales index grew by 1 per cent in the euro area and 1.1 per cent in the EU, Eurostat said in a press release.
On a monthly basis, retail trade for non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) declined by 0.1 per cent in both the euro area and the EU. Among Member States, Lithuania (+1.7 per cent), Cyprus and Malta (both +1.5 per cent), and Sweden (+1.1 per cent) recorded the strongest monthly gains, while Romania (-4.0 per cent), Poland (-0.8 per cent), and Luxembourg and Portugal (both -0.7 per cent) saw the largest declines.
Compared with August 2024, retail sales of non-food products rose by 1.9 per cent in the euro area and 2.3 per cent in the EU. Cyprus (+9.4 per cent), Malta (+9.2 per cent), and Luxembourg (+7.3 per cent) registered the highest annual increases, while Romania (-3.8 per cent), France (-1.4 per cent), and Finland (-1.2 per cent) posted the steepest declines.
