Leicester-based independent menswear retailer Wellgosh has been reportedly acquired by JD Sports for an undisclosed sum. Founded by Pete Turner as a small shop around 30 years ago, Wellgosh relocated to larger premises in the main shopping area in 1998. The family-run retailer shut down stores during lockdown and encouraged customers to shop online.

UK sportswear retailer JD Sports, which added US footwear retailer Shoe Palace to its stable of retail brands in December after completing a takeover deal worth $325 million (£240 million), said its cash consideration was being funded from its cash resources and existing bank facilities, British media reported.

According to information listed on the UK government’s Companies House, the retail group first became involved in Wellgosh in September 2020, when JD Sports chief executive officer Peter Cowgill was appointed as a director there.
