Insights

  • Dutch retail turnover rose 5 per cent YoY in July 2025, with sales volume up 3.2 per cent, as per CBS.
  • Non-food turnover grew 4.9 per cent, led by recreational goods, footwear, chemists, DIY, furnishings, and clothing.
  • Online sales increased 6.2 per cent overall, with pure online retailers up 9.8 per cent, multi-channel retailers up 0.8 per cent, though online clothing sales declined.
Dutch retail turnover was 5 per cent higher in July 2025 than in July 2024, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The sales volume was up by 3.2 per cent.

The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in July, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in July 2025 would have been almost 6 per cent higher than one year previously, CBS said in a press release.

Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 4.9 per cent year-over-year (YoY) in July. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 4.1 per cent in July 2024. YoY turnover growth was recorded by shops selling recreational goods, footwear and leather products, chemists, do-it-yourself (DIY) products (including kitchens and flooring), home furnishings, and clothing.

Turnover among online retailers was up by 6.2 per cent YoY in July. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 9.8 per cent. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) saw a 0.8 per cent increase in their online sales. However, online turnover for clothing and fashion items was lower.
