  • In November 2023, the Dutch retail sector saw a 3.2 per cent YoY turnover growth but a 0.8 per cent decline in sales volume.
  • The non-food sector's turnover increased by 0.7 per cent, despite a 2.1 per cent fall in sales volume.

In November 2023, the Dutch retail sector witnessed a 3.2 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in turnover, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). However, the sector’s sales volume saw a decline of 0.8 per cent.

The non-food sector showed resilience with a turnover increase of 0.7 per cent compared to the same month last year. However, this growth was offset by a 2.1 per cent drop in sales volume, indicating a disparity between revenue and actual unit sales.

Specifically, shops selling footwear and leather products saw a marginal decrease in turnover by 0.1 per cent YoY, while clothing stores experienced a slightly higher downturn of 0.7 per cent YoY, as per CBS.

If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in November 2023 was 3.7 per cent higher than in the same month last year.

The online retail sector saw a 0.3 per cent decrease in turnover YoY. This decline contrasts with the 4.6 per cent turnover increase recorded by web shops, whose primary business is online sales. In contrast, multi-channel retailers, who conduct online sales as a side activity, reported a more substantial 6.7 per cent decrease in their online turnover.

In November, the online turnover for other non-food products and clothing and fashion items was 0.3 per cent YoY and 13 per cent YoY lower, respectively.
