US retail giant Walmart will lay off 1,241 workers in its New Jersey and Arkansas units in 2021. The decision will come into effect on January 31, according to notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 (WARN) filed in the two states. The reduction in staff is expected to improve the retailer’s omni-channel operations.

Walmart said all affected workers were informed of the permanent layoffs in July, according to US media reports.

The retailer, reportedly, also said that though the series of layoffs intend to make the organisation more efficient and effective, it also plans to create new roles in the supply chain as well in its stores to open up new opportunities.

As per the memo, the workers who will be laid off can also apply for the new positions in the company.
