French inflation edges up in November 2024 amid mixed price trends

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in France dipped by 0.1 per cent in November 2024 month-on-month, following a 0.3 per cent rise in October. The drop was driven by a seasonal decline in airfares (-11.4 per cent), which reduced service prices by 0.3 per cent. Energy prices rose slightly (+0.2 per cent), while food and manufactured goods remained stable, the data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), the French national statistical agency, showed.

Year-on-year, inflation increased to 1.3 per cent in November, up from 1.2 per cent in October. The slower decline in energy prices (-0.7 per cent) offset moderating food inflation (+0.2 per cent). Core inflation rose slightly to 1.5 per cent from 1.4 per cent, and the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) grew by 1.7 per cent annually.

Energy prices fell less sharply (-0.7 per cent), with a smaller drop in petroleum products, while electricity prices surged (+9.5 per cent). Manufactured goods saw a slight decline (-0.3 per cent), with clothing, footwear, and health products contributing to the decrease. However, vehicle prices and household utensils showed notable acceleration.
