In both July and June, it stood at 2 per cent.
"The rate of inflation has inched up slightly for the first time this year", said Destatis president Ruth Brand in a release.
"The increase in food prices accelerated in August. In addition, the decline in energy prices contributed less to slowing inflation than in the previous months," she said.
Consumer prices were up by 0.1 per cent month on month (MoM) in August.
The prices of energy products were 2.4 per cent lower year on year (YoY) in August. The decline in energy prices, therefore, slowed for the fourth consecutive month and was markedly lower than in July 2025 (minus 3.4 per cent).
Excluding energy prices, the inflation rate stood at 2.6 per cent in August, the same as in July and June. The inflation rate excluding food and energy (core inflation) was 2.7 per cent in the month, just as it was in the two previous months.
Both rates demonstrate that inflation remained above average in other important product groups.
The total prices of goods in Germany rose by 1.3 per cent YoY in August; it rose by 1 per cent YoY in July. The prices of durable consumer goods were up by 0.9 per cent YoY in the month. The prices of clothing rose by 0.6 per cent YoY in August.
The prices of energy were down by 0.4 per cent month on month in August.
