Italy’s seasonally adjusted retail trade index decreased by 0.5 per cent in both value and volume terms in March 2025, month on month (MoM), according to Istat, the official statistics agency.

The value of retail sales dropped by 0.2 per cent in the first three months of 2025, while sales volume contracted by 0.5 per cent compared to the previous quarter.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the value of retail trade declined by 2.8 per cent, and volume decreased by 4.2 per cent.

All distribution channels experienced YoY declines in March 2025. Large-scale distribution contracted by 2.6 per cent, small-scale distribution fell by 3.1 per cent, and non-store retail sales declined by 4.7 per cent. Online sales dropped by 1.3 per cent compared to March 2024, marking the third consecutive monthly decline.

The non-food product category recorded predominantly negative YoY results.
