India’s retail sector witnessed a notable 7 per cent year-on-year growth in May 2025, according to the 62nd Retail Business Survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI). The report reflects improving consumer sentiment and a promising outlook for the coming festive season.

Category-wise, apparel and clothing recorded a growth at 7 per cent compared to the same period last year, footwear grew at 5 per cent, while furniture and furnishings posted an 8 per cent year-on-year increase.

The survey highlighted that south India led regional growth with a 9 per cent increase, followed by west India at 7 per cent, north India at 6 per cent, and east India at 4 per cent.

“After several months of moderate growth of around 4 to 5 per cent, retail businesses are beginning to show signs of accelerated growth, with sales in May 2025 growing 7 per cent compared to the same period last year. This uptick suggests improving consumer sentiment, particularly in discretionary categories. The outlook for the upcoming festive season appears optimistic,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of Retailers Association of India (RAI).
