Retail turnover in October 2024 increased by 2 per cent compared to the same month in 2023, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The growth was largely driven by a 4.2 per cent rise in turnover in the non-food sector, which includes both physical and online retail.
The total sales volume across all sectors was up by 0.6 per cent, with non-food sales volume rising by 3.7 per cent. Shops selling footwear and leather products, as well as those selling home furnishings, recorded a decrease in turnover.
Online retail continued to show strong growth, with turnover increasing by 5.6 per cent compared to October 2023. Online-only retailers saw an impressive 8.5 per cent increase in turnover, while multi-channel retailers, whose online sales are secondary to their physical stores, experienced a more modest 1.5 per cent growth in online sales. Despite the overall positive trend, online turnover for clothing and fashion items showed a decline.
