Seasonally-adjusted US CPI-U drops 0.1% in Mar; apparel index up

The US consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) decreased by 0.1 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis in March this year after rising by 0.2 per cent in February, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS).

Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased by 2.4 per cent before seasonal adjustment.

The index for energy fell by 2.4 per cent in March, as a 6.3-per cent decline in the index for gasoline more than offset increases in the indexes for electricity and natural gas. The energy index decreased 3.3 per cent over the past 12 months.

The index for all items less food and energy rose by 0.1 per cent in March following a 0.2-per cent increase in February.

The index for apparel increased over the month.

The all items index rose by 2.4 per cent for the 12 months ending March after rising by 2.8 per cent over the 12 months ending February.

The all items less food and energy index rose 2.8 per cent over the last 12 months, the smallest 12-month increase since March 2021. The energy index decreased 3.3 per cent for the 12 months ending March, a BLS release said.
