UK consumer price index (CPI) rose by 2.2 per cent in the 12 months to August this year, unchanged from July, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

On a monthly basis, CPI rose by 0.3 per cent in August, the same rate as in August 2023.

The CPI for clothing and footwear rose by 1.6 per cent in the 12 months to August compared to 2.1 per cent in the 12 months to July; on a monthly basis, it rose by 1 per cent in August compared to 1.5 per cent in August 2023.

Core CPI, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, rose by 3.6 per cent in the 12 months to August, up from 3.3 per cent in July. The CPI goods annual rate fell from minus 0.6 per cent to minus 0.9 per cent.

Producer input prices fell by 1.2 per cent in the year to August, down from a revised increase of 0.2 per cent in the year to July.

Producer output (factory gate) prices rose by 0.2 per cent in the year to August, down from a rise of 0.8 per cent in the year to July.

On a monthly basis, producer input prices fell by 0.5 per cent, while factory gate prices fell by 0.3 per cent in the month.
