The closure of malls and multiplexes across many top Indian cities by state governments to prevent crowds as a precautionary measure to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus has caused the organised retail scene in these cities to come to a grinding halt, according to Anuj Kejriwal, managing director and chief executive officer of ANAROCK Retail.

The top eight main cities have 126 malls covering over 61 million sq ft, and more than 100 malls have attached multiplexes. The closures will, therefore, result in the shutdown of a high number of establishments. Even short-term closures will have significant financial implications, Kejriwal said in a statement.

However, what matters more is that these establishments attract massive footfalls. In a health crisis like the coronavirus pandemic, shutting them down can be a major step forward in terms of harm-prevention, he added.

There are 126 malls in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi National Capital Region, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune.
