Increase in production of cocoon from 65.71 tons in 2004-05 to 122.92 tons till November has helped to up the silk yarn production in Tamil Nadu this year, informed an official of the sericulture department.
The Tamil Nadu Assistant Director of Sericulture C Thangasamy said that the demand was increasing every month and the price of silk yarn too has registered a rise from Rs.1350 per kg to Rs.1465 per kg this month.
The silk yarn production has picked up due to good off take so the government plans to support silk yarn units and rear silk worms from this year.
Sericulture department also plans to do its bit by offering assistance including finance to boost silk yarn production.
