Mizoram has replaced the Jhum (slash/burn) method to cultivate silk with that of sericulture.
As a result, the silk and cocoon output has gone up, considerably.
The Sericulture Department statistics reveal that more than two lakh silkworm seeds had produced 45 metric tons of cocoon and four metric tons of raw silk, during 2004 – 2005.
More than 500 acres was brought under sericulture farming and 20 lakh mulberry cuttings were distributed to the farmers in the state.
Around 550 farmers were trained in the art of sericulture.
Special SGSY mulberry development scheme implemented in the three autonomous district councils has shown encouraging results and about 400 kgs of cocoon has been produced from trial rearing at Lawngtlai district.
Department plans to provide backing in the form of rearing appliances, land development, cultivation cost and provision of CGI sheets under Bamboo Flowering and Famine Combat Scheme (BAFFACOS) for then development of mulberry sericulture.
