Assam has produced 124 tons of muga in 2010-11, which is the highest ever produced by the State in a financial year, as per the figures released by the Central Silk Board.
In 2009-10, the Northeastern State produced 105 tons of muga.
In the last five years, the State produced a total of 465 tons of muga, exceeding the target of 190 tons set for the 11th Five-Year Plan period.
The increase in production of muga is a good sign for the Indian silk industry, which is trying to improve domestic production to ward off the necessity to import from China. It would also be a boon to those involved in the sericulture industry.
Currently, with a share of 14.57 percent in global raw silk production, India is the second largest producer of silk, next to China.
However, India has a huge deficit in production of raw silk. In 2010-11, India produced 20,410 tons of raw silk against its consumption of 29,300 tons. Hence, it had to import the deficit amount of silk from China.
