A Standing Committee on Industries and Commerce of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council has mooted the idea of launching a Silk Mission, on the lines of the Horticulture Mission, in the state.

The Committee, headed by Mr. Ravinder Kumar Sharma, said it is necessary to set up a Counselling Guide and Consultancy Wing to tap the huge potential of silkworm rearing in the state.

The members of the Committee laid stress on establishment of small scale silk units in Rajouri, Poonch and other remote and hilly regions of the state so as to provide employment opportunities to jobless youth in those areas.

The Committee discussed progress and achievements of various wings of the state’s Department of Industries and Commerce, including Handlooms, Handicrafts, Khadi and Village Industries, etc., and directed the concerned authorities to ensure quality control of the products, as economic empowerment of artisans is related to the quality of the products.
