Silk weavers of Kondalampatti area in Salem, went on a fast on Saturday, to protest against stopping of production by silk cloth manufacturers, in order to draw the attention of Government.

Silk production has come to a standstill since February 4, 2006 due to rise in cost of jari and silk yarn following low yield of cocoon, which the silk manufacturers are protesting about. However, this was contested by Department of Sericulture.

Increase in import and anti dumping duty on Chinese silk added to input cost resulting into 50 percent increase in price of a good quality silk saree.
