Smuggling case originating in 1988 where large quantity of Chinese silk was smuggled into India by a young Uzbek woman Olga Kozireva with complicity of Custom officials, has finally been concluded and charge sheet against 31 people including 27 officials of Customs Department has been filed by CBI.
The smuggling of Chinese silk had resulted in a loss of Rs one crore in duties to the Government.
On the complaint of Director General (Vigilance), Customs and Central Excise, a case had been registered in March 2001.
Accusation against Customs officials was that they had allowed Olga Kozireva and her Uzbek associate to enter the country without paying the required custom duty for goods brought in.
