Ningnan, a county in China’s Sichuan province, which is under the administration of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, has proposed to further enlarge the scale of cocoon and silk industry, and thereby creating the world’s most high-quality cocoon production base.

Ningnan region has favourable climate for the growth of cocoons, which is an advantage, according to National Silk Association executive director Ling Lanfang.

In 2012, silkworm breeders earned an income of 350 million yuan, according to statistics, ranking first in Sichuan province.

This year, sericulture breeders earned 208 million yuan in revenue during the first half of the current year, and the annual silkworm breeder income in 2013 is expected to exceed 450 million yuan.

Over the next three years, under the Ningnan sericulture industry development plan, it is proposed to build 7.1 sq km mulberry cocoon silk industry park, with facilities for set cocoon processing, silk reeling, and making of silk fabrics and garments.

The completion of the project will transform the region from a raw material base to comprehensive silk development centre.

The silk industrial park’s aim is to build as soon as possible 50 groups of automatic silk reeling units with annual output of 2,000 tons or 5 million metres of high-grade silk fabric, and gradually build China’s largest first-class world-renowned cocoon silk industry cluster.
