Conventional Kanchi silk sarees seems synonymous to any festival or celebration in Southern India.
However, silk industry has been facing several problems for almost ten years, now.
The latest crisis that has propped up, is the rising prices of zari used to weave these magnificent, unique sarees.
Y M Narayanasamy, President, Kanchipuram Silk Sarees Manufacturers Association, informed that rise in the zari prices has had cascading effect on sarees prices resulting in almost 40 percent drop in their sales during the festival season, last year.
Average sales were almost 30 percent less than that during Pongal and Depavali festivities, last year
Increase in the wages as well as silk rates have further added to the rise in production cost.
And above all, sarees from other regions are being passed off as Kanchipuram sarees.
