Mahila Suta Tasar Co-operative starts operations

Mahila Suta Tasar (Masuta) Co-operative, formed under Company Act 1956, has started operations.

This organization is operating in states of Jharkhand and Chattisgarh with financial assistance from the Union Rural Development Ministry. Masuta has 1,600 yarn reelers and expected to raise it to 2,500 by 2008.

Tasar is vanya silk comprising varieties such as eri, muga and oak tasar which are being promoted by Central Silk Board.

Tasar yarn demand is rising and it would be doubled up by March 2007 from current 5,000 tons, informed sources.

There are some obstacles ahead for tasar silk demand such as prices, cheap iimport from China and smuggling from China.
