According to Beena Kannan, CEO of Seematti, a weaver Selvan has woven a silk saree which is 1,585 feet long and 4.35 feet wide in an effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.
The saree which took 80 days in preparation weighs 57.58 kg and had 120 weavers working 24 hours a day to complete the assignment.
The longest hand woven saree crossed the previous record of 1,276 feet long powerloom piece, which was prepared by Pothys, a leading textile house.
The weaver Selvan, who is already a recipient of 'master weaver' award by the Textile Ministry, had also received accolades from Pope for weaving Virgin Mary in pure Kancheepuram silk.
Seematti added that the saree would be cut into 51 pieces later on and she has already requested the Guinness authorities and Limca Book of Records to include the masterpiece in record books.
