Ministry of Commerce will allot over one million yuan per annum to support the project of 'shifting mulberry from east to west' since this year as an organic part of the entire strategy of transferring industry from east to west.
Actually, in the country the share of mulberry cocoon yield in eastern region declined from 51 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2005.
In Guangxi the cocoon output reached 148,000 ton in 2005 with a growth rate of 38.2 percent, already exceeding Jiangsu and jumping to the first place in term of production. The project impact of transferring mulberry westward is observed already.
According to the target of the project, during the 'eleventh five years plan' China will build 200 advanced mulberry bases, with each taking over 10000 mu (15 mu = one hectare) in area and more than 50 large-scaled cocoon silk process enterprises in a main form of combining industrial firms with farmers.
Project will help support 30 large-scaled integral enterprises which have the potential to carry out innovation with independent creative and research ability.
