Silk prices have gone up 50 percent in local markets from last year, as a result of authorities supervising production as well as supply-demand ratio in Iranian silk sector. Silk is mainly used to make carpets in the country.
Speaking to the media, Iran Silkworm Breeding Co's MD Farzam Purramezan informed that silk thread rates hiked from Rls1,70,000 per kg last year to Rls2,60,000 this year.
He added that prices of silk cocoons went up 30 percent from Rls74,000 per kg last month to Rls94,000 this month.
Local factories and workshops manufacture 900 tons of silk annually, which is just nine percent of their stated capacity and it is expected to reach 10,000 tons.
