Farmers give up sericulture due to lack of cocoon markets

Poor performance of sericulture industry and shortage of markets for cocoons have led to local farmers giving up silk worm rearing. Donors have sheared relations with the industry because of its inefficiency.
Sources informed that silk cocoon procurement has been stopped owing to weak management of the sector, low silk production and meager exports.
Sericulture industry crumpled in the 1990s, but it was restored in 2002 due to investment of sh425 million made collectively by African Development Fund, International Fund for Agriculture Development and International Center for Insect Physiology and Entomology (ICIPE).
